The Macallan: Preserving Its Legacy With Time: Space

Oct 16 2024

Embark on a 200-year journey through time inspired by whisky mastery.

The Macallan’s extraordinary legacy of single malt Scotch whisky began in 1824 when its founder, the farmer and teacher Alexander Reid, distilled a small batch of whisky in his stills in Speyside, Scotland. There had been a church on the Macallan Estate until 1400, and it had a close association with an area in Scotland called Maghellan, and this is how the distillery and its products got their name.

In celebration of The Macallan’s 200-year milestone of whisky excellence, the brand is thrilled to introduce the TIME : SPACE Collection, which consists of two unique new whiskies presented in custom vessels produced through a combination of state-of-the-art engineering and ancient craftsmanship. The brand describes making whisky as being similar to time travel since what they’re bottling now was created many years ago.

The TIME : SPACE Collection’s two new single-malt whiskies are being offered together in an innovative dual-chambered vessel designed to represent a time machine. One — the oldest whisky The Macallan has ever released — is a 1940 vintage whisky, which was aged for 84 years before being bottled in 2024. The second whisky, now five years old, is the company’s first single malt released from its Distillery, which opened in 2018. To commemorate The Macallan’s 200th anniversary, only 200 of these rare and unique items are available.

In addition to its oldest and younger whiskies, The Macallan is offering its TIME : SPACE Mastery, a unique single malt with layers of complexity that embraces 200 years of company history through its use of 14 cask types, which create layers of complexity and an incredible depth of aroma, texture and flavour.

“Through a fusion of art and science, we have ensured the continuity of the character of our whisky,” says Kirsteen Campbell, a master whisky- maker at The Macallan. “As a Whisky Mastery Team, our roles are unique in the sense that we get to time travel — selecting whisky from the past crafted by our predecessors whilst simultaneously laying down casks for future generations of whisky-makers and consumers. To smell, taste and select whisky created over eight decades ago is an exceptionally rare occasion in the life of a whisky maker and one which I will treasure,” says Campbell.

The Mastery whisky is presented in a meticulously crafted circular container symbolizing the cycle of life and the perpetual journey from the past to the future. The hallmark of The Macallan is its dedication to quality and craftsmanship — a dedication that strengthens year after year.
