Dr. Tirone David, world-famous heart surgeon and prolific author, becomes the first heart surgeon ever inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame.
Those who occasionally suffer from writer’s block should consider the career achievements of Dr. Tirone David, a professor of surgery at the University of Toronto: he has published 480 scientific papers, 43 chapters in medical textbooks and six surgical textbooks. Clearly, this is a man who does not fear the blank page. Dr. David, who holds the Melanie Munk Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery at Toronto General Hospital’s Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, now has achieved another novel distinction for those in his field — in June of 2025 he was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, the first heart surgeon to be so recognized.
“It is an honour, undoubtedly, particularly being the first heart surgeon to be in this club,” said Dr. David in an interview with Dolce Magazine following the induction ceremony. “When you look at Canada’s Walk of Fame, there are a lot of singers and stars and professional players, but not many heart surgeons or doctors. When I was inducted, they said I was like a rock star because colleagues want to take selfies with me — which is true, but I never look at myself like a rock star.”
A celebration of Canadian excellence and achievement since 1998, Canada’s Walk of Fame has now honoured 204 Canadians, among them activists, scientists, philanthropists, athletes, coaches, actors, directors, writers, producers, musicians and comedians. Dr. David was inducted into the Science and Technology category, one of five categories that also include Arts and Entertainment, Business and Entrepreneurship, Philanthropy and Humanities, and Sports and Athletics.
Dr. David’s life story is one of facing challenges and overcoming them. He was born in a small village in Brazil where his uncle was a pharmacist, which created his interest in chemistry and influenced his decision to become a doctor. When Dr. David wrote his entrance exam for medical school, among the 1,800 candidates vying for only 100 spots in the school, he came in second. At the age of only 23 he left Brazil for Brooklyn, New York, knowing very little English, to intern at a hospital there. In 1978, when he was 34, he moved to Canada because he admired its universal health care system and its promise that everyone gets the same level of free health care regardless of income or social standing.
Dr. David has developed numerous surgical procedures to treat patients with heart valve disease, complications of myocardial infarction and thoracic aneurysms and has prospectively followed these patients over the past four decades. One of these pioneering surgical procedures, known throughout the medical world as the “David procedure,” may account for some of those selfies and the rock-star adoration.
In his distinguished medical career, Dr. David has been a member of the editorial board of several medical journals. He is an active member of numerous surgical and medical societies and is an honourary member of 14 international medical societies. He was president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in 2005, the recipient of its Scientific Achievement Award in 2016 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
Among his many honours, Dr. David received the Order of Ontario in 1993 and was named a member of the Order of Canada in 1996, the highest honour given to civilians in Canada. Dr. David was also elected University Professor in 2004, the highest honour the University of Toronto bestows on its professors. In 2018 the Brazilian Government honoured him with its Order of Rio Branco.
Despite these and many other accolades, Dr. David has been guided and shaped by his compassion, empathy and his wish to help people, which he says is the key to happiness. “Happiness is truly an internal thing, and you can achieve that by giving yourself to others,” he said. “The inner retrospection that a human being gets is the most important thing in life, and to help someone in need is a privilege.”
To view Dr. David Tirone’s induction, the 2025 Canada’s Walk of Fame Broadcast is available for streaming on CBC Gem.
