Stephanie Borg: The Creative Brilliance of Magnificent Malta

“It’s a love that’s stayed with me continuing to inspire my work to this day.”

A self-taught artist, graphic and surface designer, Stephanie Borg has created more than 400 products that are enjoyed in beautiful homes and offices around the world and are available at her charming Studio Boutique in Rabat and from her online shop, which offers worldwide delivery.

Her artistry, creativity and keen eye for textures has been honed by more than 35 years of artistic practice as a citizen of the world. Born in Malta, Borg has lived in the Bahamas, the U.S., Italy and the Sultanate of Oman, where she resided for six years before returning to her native Malta.

Coming home unleashed emotionally powerful visual memories from her childhood. “One of my earliest and most vivid memories is from my parents’ flat, where I spent the first five years of my life,” recalls Borg. “The entire floor was covered in traditional Maltese tiles, and I remember being completely captivated by them. I’d sit on the floor tracing and colouring the patterns, completely absorbed in my own little world. I didn’t realize it then, but those quiet moments were already nurturing a deep love for design, detail and Maltese heritage. That early fascination lay dormant for some years, but when I returned to Malta in 2008, it all came rushing back. And it’s a love that’s stayed with me ever since, continuing to inspire my work to this day.”

Her inspiration continues to come from the love of her home island — the distinctive colours and patterns seen all around the island, from its wrought iron to its tiles, its charming boats and vivid national costumes.

“I’ve grown more confident in my voice and direction, something that naturally comes with years of learning, experimenting and simply living,” says Borg. “But I’ve also come to realize how important it is to stay curious and open.”
