Toronto Meets the Blue Sky City: A Day of Calgary Charm & Western Hospitality

The Blue Sky City brought its signature sunshine and charm to Toronto last week with its vibrant Colours of Calgary activation. Tourism Calgary hosted a free daylong experience at Sankofa Square in the heart of downtown Toronto, inviting guests to discover the warmth, hospitality and adventurous spirit that define Western Canada’s cultural gem. Through immersive experiences, signature local flavours and Calgary’s iconic White Hatting ceremonies, the activation offered a vibrant glimpse into the welcoming spirit and inspiring energy that awaits travellers in this thriving Canadian metropolis.

Voted the Friendliest City in the World by millions through the Condé Nast survey, Calgary offers an exceptional landscape of urban diversity, rich cultural heritage, award-winning dining and innovative technologies. From its community-oriented ecosphere to breathtaking Rocky Mountains adventures, there is an infinite supply of experiences to enjoy across the city’s average 333 days of sunshine.

Tourism Calgary President CEO Alisha Reynolds shared some wonderful insights with Dolce on the Toronto event and what new travellers can expect from their visit:

“Exploring our own backyard as Canadians has become increasingly more popular over the last couple of years, Calgary is a ‘city of and’s’, full of possibilities.”

While Calgary has long been internationally recognized for the Calgary Stampede and its Western roots, Reynolds explained that the city is continuing to evolve into something far more multidimensional for a new generation of travellers. Beneath the cowboy culture and iconic mountain backdrop lies one of Canada’s fastest-growing tech hubs, paired with a youthful energy that is reshaping the city’s cultural identity.

“We are Blue Sky City,” Reynolds shared. “Not only because we have 333 days of sunshine, but because we’re a city of possibilities. It’s about looking at what’s next.”

That sense of possibility is visible throughout Calgary’s rapidly expanding culinary, nightlife, arts and café scenes. From award-winning restaurants and growing craft breweries to bustling local coffee culture, Calgary has embraced a modern vibrancy that complements its long-standing Western heritage. Reynolds described the city as a place where individuality is celebrated and where visitors are encouraged to fully embrace both adventure and authenticity.

Bringing that energy directly to Toronto through Colours of Calgary felt especially timely as more Canadians continue prioritizing domestic travel and rediscovering destinations within their own country. Tourism Calgary saw significant growth in visitation from Ontario over the past year, with Torontonians increasingly drawn toward Western Canada’s open landscapes, cultural richness and slower pace of connection.

At the core of Calgary’s tourism identity, however, is not simply what visitors can see, but how the city makes them feel.

“It’s in our core,” Reynolds explained, while reflecting on Calgary’s reputation for hospitality. “We want people to experience our city and feel loved and feel like they belong.”

That warmth was unmistakably present throughout the Toronto activation. Guests experienced Calgary’s beloved White Hatting tradition, sampled local flavours, interacted with brand ambassadors and immersed themselves in the city’s signature welcoming spirit. The symbolic white hat itself carries decades of history dating back to 1948, when Calgarians famously travelled to Toronto for the Grey Cup and gifted their white hats to locals — including Toronto’s mayor — as a gesture of friendship and hospitality. Today, the tradition remains one of Calgary’s most recognizable emblems of kindness and community.

In many ways, Reynolds believes Calgary’s greatest strength lies in its balance. The city effortlessly merges urban vibrancy with extraordinary access to nature, creating an experience that feels both energizing and restorative. Within Calgary itself, visitors can explore over 1,000 kilometres of connected urban pathways, bike around the Glenmore Reservoir, or spend the afternoon along the city’s river systems before transitioning seamlessly into its lively culinary and nightlife offerings by evening.

Just beyond the city limits, adventure expands even further. Calgary serves as a gateway to the Canadian Rockies, placing world-renowned hiking, skiing and breathtaking landscapes less than an hour away from downtown. Reynolds noted that visitors are often surprised by how naturally Calgary blends cosmopolitan experiences with outdoor exploration.

“You can have an incredible adventure, and then put your head on the pillow after you’ve gone to a great nightclub or restaurant,” she said.

It is this duality — modern yet rooted, energetic yet grounding — that continues to define Calgary’s growing appeal among Canadian travellers seeking meaningful experiences closer to home. More than simply a destination, Calgary offers visitors a feeling of openness, belonging and joy that lingers long after the trip has ended.

“It’s like a dose of sunshine that makes their heart feel whole,” Reynolds said. “There are moments in Calgary that surprise and delight people, these right-out-of-the-blue experiences, where you remember that life is good. Life is a thing to be lived, enjoyed and remembered. And in Calgary, I hope people get that dose of sunshine that wakes up their heart and makes them feel good.”
