The House of Hazelwood: A Sip Back In Time

Dec 14 2023

The House of Hazelwood Collection are family-treasured Scotch whiskies made available for the very first time.

All families have their special way of doing things, traditions of how they may mark certain holidays or celebrations, or secret recipes that they pass that they pass on through generations. Safe to say few have as treasured a recipe or tradition as the Gordon family of Dufftown, which is tucked away in the Highlands near Scotland’s northeast coast. For almost a century the family has maintained the greatest inventory of the finest aged Scotch whiskies anywhere in the world. Now, for the very first time, it is being made available to the public.

The House of Hazelwood is an unrivalled collection of aged Scotch whiskies, so named after the family’s Dufftown home, Hazelwood House. For the first time, this once-private collection is being released to those outside of the immediate Gordon family in small, hand-selected batches. These are the most compelling whiskies that the inventory has to offer, a bridge spanning seven decades between the past and present, each of which is remarkable by virtue of its character, its history and its method of production. Every cask has been aged for at least fifty years and every bottle has its own story to tell.

The launch includes the Charles Gordon Collection, named for a legend within the Scotch whisky community who spent much of his youth at Hazelwood House. In later years he was instrumental in bringing some of the earliest stock that was laid down for the House of Hazelwood collection. Whiskies include Blended at Birth, an unusual combination of malt and grain whiskies that was distilled in 1963 and spent the following 56 years maturing in American oak, where it took on the rich, decadent notes of marzipan and fruitcake. This collection also includes The Long Marriage, distilled in the mid-sixties and bottled at natural cask strength, a technique that has produced a wonderfully evocative antique character which can only be achieved through decades of slow development.

The release also includes the Legacy Collection, comprising whiskies of exceptional character and provenance, such as the Spirit of Scotland, first created in 1994 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the oldest recorded reference to Scotch whisky, as well as The Tops, the best of the best of the inventory.

For collectors and connoisseurs, the House of Hazelwood Collection is a rare chance to enjoy the very best and to venture back in time, where a “wee dram” can be savoured as only the Scots know how to do.
